Governor Newsom Launches Late Night Anti-ICE Rhetoric, VP Vance Responds ‘Go To Hell’
‘Authoritarian actions of an authoritarian government’ were answered with sniper fire at a Dallas ICE facility this morning

On Tuesday night, California Governor Gavin Newsom appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert repeating his verbal attacks on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, telling Colbert that arrests of illegal aliens by ICE are “authoritarian actions of an authoritarian government.”
This morning, a deranged sniper identified by authorities as Joshua Jahn shot at an unmarked van at an ICE facility in Dallas, TX, killing two detainees before turning the gun on himself. The FBI confirmed that anti-ICE slogans were carved on rifle cartridge found at the scene and “the evidence shows an idealogical motive behind this attack.”
FBI Director Kash Patel stated on X:
“While the investigation is ongoing, an initial review of the evidence shows an idealogical motive behind this attack (see photo below). One of the unspent shell casings recovered was engraved with the phrase “ANTI ICE.” More updates will be forthcoming. These despicable, politically motivated attacks against law enforcement are not a one-off. We are only miles from Prarieland, Texas where just two months ago an individual ambushed a separate ICE facility targeting their officers. It has to end and the FBI and our partners will lead these investigative efforts to see to it that those who target our law enforcement are pursued and brought to the fullest extent of justice. Thankfully, no law enforcement personnel were injured. Please pray for the injured and deceased.”
At an appearance in North Carolina today, Vice President J.D. Vance responded to Newsom’s rhetoric:
“When Democrats like Gavin Newsom say these people are part of an authoritarian government, when the left-wing media lies about what they’re doing and who they’re arresting and the actual job of law enforcement, what they’re doing is encouraging crazy people to go and commit violence.
“You don’t have to agree with our policies. But if your political rhetoric encourages violence against our law enforcement, you can go straight to hell!”
Newsom replied, “No thanks, J.D. I will not be going “straight to hell” today. Though when I watch you speak I certainly feel like I am already there.”
Conversely, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo (R), former Clark County Sheriff, responded with compassion and class.
Last week, Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli showed “zero tolerance for direct or implicit threats against government officials” in response to Newsom’s warning on X that Secretary of Homeland Security was “going to have a bad day” after the California legislature passed numerous Anti-ICE, pro-illegal immigration bills that Newsom proudly signed.
The Globe reported:
“Standing alongside leaders of communities terrorized by Trump’s lawless raids across Southern California, Governor Gavin Newsom today signed a groundbreaking package of bills to respond to federal overreach and push back against Trump and Stephen Miller’s ‘secret police’ tactics in California,” Governor Newsom announced Saturday. “The new laws make California the first state in the nation to prohibit federal law enforcement officers, including ICE, from hiding their identities, and make it less likely that federal immigration enforcement officers target children in classrooms and patients in hospitals.”
California Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas also chimed in, referring to ICE agents as “Donald Trump’s secret police,” and said they “are terrorizing hardworking Californians — but Democrats are fighting back to keep our communities safe from Trump’s heartless and illegal ICE raids. Secret police are un-American. These new laws make it clear: Show some ID, masks off. We will fight as long as it takes to protect California.”
Essaylli has since directed federal agencies to ignore Newsom’s unconstitutional package of bills.
Since ICE has began enforcing federal law under President Trump’s directive, Democrats have referred to ICE as the “gestapo,” and publicly lobbed rhetorical assaults at officers and Trump administration officials.
ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons now reports a more than 1,000 percent increase in assaults on ICE officers following Wednesday’s deadly shooting.
On July 4, 2024, a group of 14 people were charged after an Alvarado, TX, police officer was ambushed and shot in the neck at ICE’s Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, WFAA previously reported.
Three days ago, Newsom said to ICE, “Unmask. What are you afraid of?” Today, he got his answer.
Update: The White House has now weighed in on the ICE facility sniper attack with the following statement from President Trump on Truth Social: “I have been briefed on the deadly shooting at the ICE Field Office in Dallas, Texas. It has now been revealed the deranged shooter wrote “Anti-ICE” on his shell casings…I AM CALLING ON ALL DEMOCRATS TO STOP THIS RHETORIC AGAINST ICE AND AMERICA’S LAW ENFORCEMENT, RIGHT NOW!

The detainees were not targeted. The Van and facility was, the detainees were caught in the crossfire from an amateur shooter.
