SF Mayor Blames ‘Right Wing’ Reporting on Homeless, Drug Dealing, Rampant Smash-and-Grab Thefts

Tourists need to be adequately informed of the perils they could face as Mayor Breed takes steps to improve her image

San Francisco’s mayor London Breed demands residents, media and journalists follow her pronouncements, that our city is safe, tourism is flourishing, the economy is coming back, and any negative reporting on homelessness, drug dealing, and rampant car smash-and-grabs is “Right Wing.”

What exists in San Francisco are several concurrent realms. A few short blocks from one apparently clean and safe neighborhood one may find graffitied abandoned storefronts, several cars’ windows smashed and a few tents hogging the sidewalk surrounded by bicycle parts and trash, as junkies shoot up, smoke, snort and ingest in plain sight.

At just seven miles by seven miles, our city’s population and tourists are crammed together; we are the second most-dense city in America.

Mayor London Breed is desperately taking steps to improve her image, and by extension, the image of San Francisco – not only to bolster her claims of return of tourism, but to save herself from her increasingly likely defeat as we march toward the 2024’s elections. Her latest pronouncements of a now vibrant tourist industry, coupled with short video interviews of joyful visitors expressing surprise at the safety and cleanliness where they visit, feel orchestrated and mask the obvious reality. Two realms existing simultaneously: hers is a slick feel-good message worthy of a tourism bureau advert. Yet Breed really wants the addicts’ tents, the drug use and car smash-and-grabs to go away and not be reported at all. The so-called Right Wing media reporting needs to stop, in her mind.

But then, CNN broadcasts an exposé on crime in San Francisco. Elsewhere, journalists not far away are robbed, social media postings show storefronts’ windows smashed, violent encounters between meth smokers and innocent commuters on public transportation are posted on social media. Convenience stores and neighborhood pharmacies shutter or take drastic anti-theft measures to curb massive losses.

Car smash and grabs continue unabated now. Just recently, video documented two separate tourists’ cars hit within yards of each other at San Francisco’s west side Ocean Beach.  These visitors were clearly unaware their valuables were a target even when naively hidden in the false safety of their rental car’s trunk. Mere minutes later, all was gone.

Mayor Breed cannot in good conscience release a travel warning to the vulnerable and ill-informed public, but she should. A carefully-crafted Public Service Announcement would be enormously helpful. Until law enforcement is posted at our city’s tourist spots, these blatant daytime thefts will continue, regardless of what realities Breed hopes wouldn’t be reported.

San Francisco does not exist in a binary safe or not-safe environment. London Breed seeks to quash the spectrum of varying levels of security and clean to filth, rampant crime and drug dealers’ haven, and portray the city in its best light. Tourists instead need to be adequately informed of the perils they could face if they only receive the mayor’s message. Breed’s narrative is borderline propaganda, and is hurting us all.

  1. Mayor Breed is a particular breed of politician. She is not about to admit that her progressive policies have failed to protect and serve the citizens and visitors of San Francisco.
Mayor Breed now depends on citizen journalist and you tubers to get the word out, DO NOT VISIT SAN FRANCISCO.
It has been designed to now be a dystopian hell hole.
With this comment, I have done my part to warn people stay out of San Francisco
Mayor London Breed would rather be in a club feeling the spirit of Tony! Toni! Tone!

  2. SF has had theft problems for a long time, its not gotten better. 20 years ago we visited for a few hours. Went to the wharf, went to dinner at McCormicks, came out to find our driver window smashed, new GPS gone, rear window smashed and briefcase gone. Had to drive home across the bay bridge in November with those broken windows down. It was not pleasant and don’t go back much based on that experience years ago.

  3. If a key part of your tourism campaign is “come to our city-you probably won’t get stabbed!” then your problem may be bigger than you are willing to admit

  4. “…we are the second most-dense city in America.”

No, I can unreservedly state that San Franfreakshow is THE most dense city in America… especially its politicians…
Breed and Wiener, Ting and Wicks are ALL the densest politicians ever to grace this fair state…

  5. London Breed is a typical bay area politician: Narcisstic Personality Disorder

Symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder and how severe they are can vary. People with the disorder can:

Have an unreasonably high sense of self-importance and require constant, excessive admiration.
Feel that they deserve privileges and special treatment.
Expect to be recognized as superior even without achievements.
Make achievements and talents seem bigger than they are.
Be preoccupied with fantasies about success, power, brilliance, beauty or the perfect mate.
Believe they are superior to others and can only spend time with or be understood by equally special people.
Be critical of and look down on people they feel are not important.
Expect special favors and expect other people to do what they want without questioning them.
Take advantage of others to get what they want.
Have an inability or unwillingness to recognize the needs and feelings of others.
Be envious of others and believe others envy them.
Behave in an arrogant way, brag a lot and come across as conceited.
Insist on having the best of everything — for instance, the best car or office.
At the same time, people with narcissistic personality disorder have trouble handling anything they view as criticism. They can:

Become impatient or angry when they don’t receive special recognition or treatment.
Have major problems interacting with others and easily feel slighted.
React with rage or contempt and try to belittle other people to make themselves appear superior.
Have difficulty managing their emotions and behavior.
Experience major problems dealing with stress and adapting to change.
Withdraw from or avoid situations in which they might fail.
Feel depressed and moody because they fall short of perfection.
Have secret feelings of insecurity, shame, humiliation and fear of being exposed as a failure.

    1. That is brilliant. Describes many of those who hold office in CA and elsewhere as well. Just goes to show how prevalent mental illness is in our culture. Should we seriously address the issue of mental illness, how quickly will we vacate officials (elected and not), CEOs/C-others, street denizens, etc, from their public places and positions where they interfere with the lives of productive citizens.

  6. Here is something to consider. Breed is by far the best most viable candidate for Mayor. That’s how bad things are. All the alternatives are worse. We are talking Chesa Boudin worse. Every single person on the current or any recent Board of Supervisors makes Breed look very good. Very very good. They are gawd awful beyond belief.

As for how bad things are. We are not back to the Mad Max years of the1980’s / early 1990’s yet. But its getting close. The fact that the owner of the International Cafe in the Lower Haight is thinking of giving up due to crime is a sign of how bad things have got.

    https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/cafe-international-lower-haight-18339072.php

Anyone who remembers that area on Haight back in the 1980’s and 1990’s and just how bad it could get at times back will have a very idea of how bad it must be now for local businesses. It was a very rough area back then. Before gentrification. It was the only time I had to dive beneath a table because it looked like a dealer who came into the cafe because he saw someone who owed him money was about to go kinetic. He did nt. Backed up staff on more than one occasion when dealing with street people. Physically threw out the door one aggressive street bum who made a grab at one of the staff. This as back in the 1990’s.

Thats what SF was like before Three Strikes. And has become again now that Three Strikes was dismantled by Props 47 and 57. Yet another Jerry Brown catastrophe for the state. There have been so many over the last 50 years.

    1. Had a really funny run in with that charlatan on twitter recently. He spouted the usual clichés so I chewed him up and spat him out. He quickly ran way once he realized not only had I lived in SF much longer than he had (he’s a dot comer from the 1990’s), knew the history and politics of SF a lot better than he did, but knew all the embarrassing story’s and where the bodies were buried for “his side”.

He is not stupid. He knew when to shut up. Which is why people like him are so dangerous politically. Inveterate liars who stop at nothing, would use any tactic no matter how nasty, to destroy people who disagree with them.

In other words the typical “progressive activist” in SF. In SF the term “activist” either means serious personality disorder / mental illness or straight up psychopath. Pretty much all the high profile ones in SF are sociopaths / psychopaths’.

  7. London Breed was installed as mayor by the criminal Democrat cabal do their bidding. Breed’s narrative is typical Democrat propaganda–and there’s nothing borderline about it.

  8. That’s right it’s a right wing conspiracy. Keep telling yourselves that Democrats, as you step in human feces on the sidewalk. Have fun cleaning the soles of your shoes. LOL

  9. I have been a human services np exec for years and I can say, without a doubt, this is self-inflicted. Broken windows theory does have merit and the ignorance of people who believe it shouldn’t, are the problem. Breed is a moron, but kudos to California to sticking to ther knitting…

  10. She sounds a lot like joe biden. lying does not make it so. How far down does cali-4-nia have to sink before sane reasonable people get rid of the demo-rat party control. Well, first you need to get rid of vote by mail and go back to absentee voting. You will need to trash the drop boxes completely. And limit voting to 3 days prior and 3 days after election day. If you cannot get to the polls to vote during that time, you do not need to vote. This will limit their ability to commit gross voter fraud.

  11. Mayor Breed is a Democrat; Democrats LIE, constantly. Most of San Franciscans are Democrats and voted for her, they get what they voted for. I haven’t visited there in years and have no desire to do so, but from what I read and hear, the city is swirling down the toilet and I say, “Good riddance!”
