Brace Yourself for California Democrats’ Upcoming $8 per Gallon Gas
But first, the gas tax increase of nearly 65 cents a gallon from going into effect July 1st
By Katy Grimes, June 19, 2025 3:30 am
California Democrats killed bills earlier this month that would have suspended the Low Carbon Fuel Standard gas tax increase of nearly 65 cents a gallon from going into effect July 1st.
Facing a 65 cent gas tax increase July 1st, everyone in California will be paying more than $5.00 for a gallon of regular gas. And that’s just on the way to an eventual $8.63 per gallon.
The Globe just reported:
Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones (R-San Diego) and California GOP lawmakers announced Tuesday that they are demanding an independent audit of the California Air Resources Board for its overhaul of the Low Carbon Fuel Standard, which will raise gasoline prices by up to 65 cents per gallon when it takes effect on July 1st.
“Californians are demanding answers and action before yet another hidden tax hits the pump,” said Senator Jones. “After nearly a month of stonewalling from the Newsom Administration, this audit is the only way to expose what they’re hiding. Meanwhile, thousands of Californians have already signed my petition to repeal the regulation entirely.”
CalTax breaks down the California Air Resources Board Low Carbon Fuel Standard tax:
California’s excise tax on gasoline will increase to 61.2 cents per gallon July 1, an increase of 1.6 cents per gallon over the current rate of 59.6 cents per gallon, the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration announced June 4.
The tax rate on diesel fuel – a matter of great interest for many businesses, especially those in the trucking and agricultural industries – will increase from 45.4 cents per gallon to 46.6 cents per gallon, likely leading to higher costs for consumers for many goods and services.
The tax increases are in addition to any other increases that may be imposed as a result of fuel standards developed by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Increases resulting from CARB actions also would take effect July 1.
The gas tax rate has more than doubled during the past 10 years. The largest year-to-year increase occurred in 2017 as a result of SB 1 (Chapter 5, Statutes of 2017), which increased gas tax by 12 cents per gallon and increased the diesel tax by 20 cents per gallon (both effective November 1, 2017) and required that the rates be adjusted annually based on the California Consumer Price Index.
Although Californians often mention vehicle-related taxes as a topic of major concern – and cited an increase in the vehicle license tax as a major factor in their decision to recall Governor Gray Davis in 2003 – the CDTFA did not issue a news release or use its social media channels to alert the media or general public to the increase. Instead, the increase was posted on the agency’s website as a special notice to retailers of gas and diesel fuels.
In 2023, the Legislature passed SB2X1 by Senator Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley), which created a new government agency to arbitrarily decide how much profit oil and gas businesses are allowed to make, disrupting California’s energy market and threatening the reliability of the state’s fuel supply, according to Assembly Republicans the Globe reported.
The governor’s scheme created “a new independent watchdog within the California Energy Commission charged with monitoring California’s petroleum market on a daily basis to ensure market participants play by the rules.”
What exactly are “excess profits?” There really isn’t such a thing – except in Socialism/Marxism/Communism.
Regarding our cars, the cost to drive them is up because of gas prices, gas taxes, DMV registration, and auto insurance. Even those who drive electric vehicles acknowledge that their electric bills are up thanks to tiered electricity pricing.
The cost to register the cars with the California DMV is up, shockingly. My truck registration jumped from an already high $700 annually to nearly $1,000 this year. Our SUV is already high at $700 for DMV registration. Our auto insurance has gone up 100 percent in 2025 – doubled in one year.
One of our family members is a Florida resident. He pays $35 per DMV vehicle registration every 2 years.

Gas prices today, June 18, 2025 in the U.S.:
The National average price per gallon of regular gas is $3.187;
The California average price per gallon of regular gas is $4.649;
the high in California is is $5.382.
Add 65 cents to that and the price for a gallon of regular gas in California July 1 will be $5.30.
Because, as the Globe reported in November:
The California Air Resources Board voted to approve new gas regulations which will result in as much as a .65 cent per gallon increase in California’s gas prices.
The California Governor, Legislature and State Air Resources Board are working hand in glove to restrict the availability of oil and gas and increase the cost of gas at the pump so severely, middle class and working class drivers will be making choices between groceries and fuel for the car.
The Globe reported that California gas prices could escalate 75% to $8.43 per gallon in 2026 due to the pending shutdowns of two major in-state refineries, according to USC Professor Michael Mische.
“California can ill afford the loss of one refinery, let alone two,” says Professor Mische in a new report warning of an impending gas crisis this summer.
“In 1982, California satisfied 62% of its petroleum needs from in-state oil producers,” says Professor Mische. “Since 1990, California’s imports of petroleum from non-U.S. producers have increased by a staggering 713%. While California was becoming more dependent on foreign sources, the overall U.S. became less dependent.”
For his warning, Professor Mische was rewarded with a very nasty smear from Governor Gavin Newsom accusing the professor of being bankrolled by Saudi Arabia.
But the truth is out.

You cannot have bonehead governance like this without corrupt elections. Who votes to spend 4 billion a year on an illegal labor force brought in to keep citizen wages down, and able bodied welfare recipients on the couch?
You said it, brother.
The very presence of so many Dem-Marxists in seats of power tells us that our elections are rigged.
It’s the Republicans AND Democrats! Name one viable countermeasure launched by a Republican? You can’t! The Republicans are nothing more than theatrical staged opposition.
Name one battle against Newsom the cowardly conservatives have won? Anain you can’t. People, the folks and conspirators working to destroy you always win. Sitting on your dead ass waiting for the next corrupt election cycle highlights the faintheartedness of those Newsom and his fellow cohorts are so aptly destroying. Collectively those who claim to oppose Newsom have instead further emboldened him. Newsom’s unrelenting strength come from those who laud the stupid and hollow assaults against him. Amazingly he’s an incredible guy just on the wrong side of issues.
I am curious, how is Newsom amazingly an incredible guy?
Do you personally know him? Is it how he has conducted himself, personally and professionsally ?
My questions to you, Eyeinthesky are sincere.
p.s. I will give you one name Kevin Kiley. He went to Congress and successfully lobbied to have the train to nowhere defunded. He also took part in pushing for legislation to end the 2035 EV mandate.
Newsom is such an incredible guy that he spent time at a wine tasting at his winery up in Napa during the LA riots!!
City Journal released the breaking story!
Great Leader good all around guy, the same guy that cheated with his best friend’s wife!! Yeah he is on the wrong side of things, that is for sure!! 😣

You are absolutely correct re: Kevin Kiley however the most important position he assumed was to oppose the FED from issueing digital currency. The FED has been the bane of America. We’re closing in on $40Trillion in debt with no conceivable way to reconcile this horrific liability.
Everything Newsom stands for and advocates I am vehemently opposed to however his mental acumen and adroitness is astounding as demonstrated but his recent exchange with Trump. Newsom tripled down on Trump and Donald ran.
Sadly the patriotic movement had no one who can stand up to and defeat Newsom. Bianco Grennell and the likes have not a chance as California and America entered the financial/fascists abyss eons ago. Californians are being taxed and legislated to extinction.
The recall movement failed Newsom was reelected to be followed by the second recall effort crashing and burning. There’s an authoritative aspect to Newsom’s demeanor the rank and file succumb to.
@Eye, you might want to watch something other than MSNBC. Oh, yeah, Trump really ran (roll eyes). Guess what? The National Guard is still there. Looks like another swing and a miss for Newsom…as usual.
What else is new? King Newsom is a total failure by every metric.
Amazingly nice try.
Your reasoning seems a little off, considering that the make-up of California’s legislature has had a Democrat majority for decades. It’s currently 75% Democratic; that’s 90 Democrats and 29 Republicans rewriting our laws. Our last real Republican governor (Arnold excluded) was Pete Wilson, 25 years ago.
I’m in Newport right now. (Newport, Oregon) Road trip.
Gas is under $3.50 at every station in town. This is the tourist area.
Oregon produces no oil and has zero oil refineries. Yet oil pulled out of the ground in Bakersfield and refined into gas in Richmond, then hauled by truck on winding roads way the hell up to Oregon costs 35% less than it does in California.
It’s a sad day when my state is so easily outsmarted by a state like Oregon.
I have a feeling that virtually zero Californians are aware of what’s happening in just a few days from now (readers of this site are the rare exception). They’ll pull up to the pump on July 1 and say “WTF” (without abbreviating it) and curse and swear and then just pay and go on about their day. They’ll mumble and grumble and nothing will happen. The satanic Dem’s in Sacto will continue to rule over us and not give a damn what we think. Honestly, I don’t know what it’s going to take to turn this state around, since elections are corrupt, there’s no hope of voting them out of office. It seems nothing short of a revolution at this point can change the trajectory we’re on, they’ve perfected the art of the steal and until someone (or something) forces a change, it will only get worse.
I came to this state in July of 1977, and have seen it go from a solidly Republican state it that time to a massively Demorat state now, but it really accelerated once Newscum got into office. Remember, Prop 187 was in 1994, not so long ago. How far we’ve fallen since then! I used to speak to my mom in FL all the time, and for many years, without fail, gas prices were much lower here than in FL. That’s reversed dramatically in the past 15 years or so. Now we have the highest in the nation, and they want to pile still MORE on top of that? Believe me, if I could convince my wife to leave here, I’d be out of this place tomorrow. There’s also a lack of decent places to leave to, so what is to be done? I don’t know the answer to that… yet.
Spot on John Nobles.
Those same people who will react with the WTF are also the same people who said WTF when the bridge tolls went up dramatically as well as water prices, power and gas ….
Newsom has accelerated this insanity of tax and spend (waste)!
I believe the steal has been perfected with the help of the apathetic that do not get out and vote, low voter turn out is an issue in my county, which churns out the likes of Eric Swalwell, Alex Lee, Buffy Wicks. Less legal voters means they can stuff the ballot box with illegal, fraudulent votes that tip the scales!
Remember what Jerry Brown said: “People will pay whatever the cost to live in California”.
Hilo HI on the Big Island. A buddy of mine moved there: He said the place delivers peaceful bliss and contentment and gas less expensive than Cali
The democrat party ruins virtually everything that they can influence.
Last year, I purchased a California fishing license.
This year I won’t.
Last year I fished in a California state recreational area.
This year I won’t.
I asked the Sacramento Green Mafia, aka the state government, what we get for paying $2 per gallon, or $35 Billion annually, more than e.g. in Kentucky for the privilege of driving in California. And only a part of that goes officially into the state coffers to compensate a grossly overpaid and inefficient bureaucracy. The vast majority of those $35 Billion disappears simply, with an unholy alliance of private and government interests lining their pockets.
As you might expect, crickets, even from the GOP.
Sounds about right.
Now multiply all the fees we encounter for building, the recycling fees, 12.00 bridge tolls.
It never goes where they say it will! Just look at our roads! They should be pristine.
Sounds about right, @Hoepper.

we were the first to have these electronic voting machines.
silicon valley techies gleefully bragged that they are super easy to hack.
we probably have not had an honest voter represented election here in 30 years.
Newsom did not win the recall.
and Hilary did not win CA by 3,000,000 in 2015.
Brown had just handed out 3,000,000 new motor voter licenses to illegals.
illegals didn’t vote but with them registered techies input proxy votes.
add in ballot stuffing, illegal, no signature but still approved, dead and duplicate voters and you end up with pretty much an identical election to countries where corruption makes the outcome a foregone conclusion.
A 65 cent gas tax increase will have a chilling effect on the California economy thanks to the unelected CARB Board. We already have the third highest unemployment rate in the nation, and companies continue to move out of the state. CARB should be disbanded. They are of no value anymore. The Federal regulations are more than enough to keep the air clean.
I hope all federal aid and water is cut off from Globalist California , and if the secede , we can decaler war on it and k il l all the illegals and lgbtq in hollypedowood
Certainly it will be ax handles and torches time now, right? How about a million man march on the capital and the offices of CARB?
Someone who knows how to dig up how much the average california refinery profits off of a gallon of gas and compare that to how tax the state applies to a gallon of gas, and if it’s anywhere close or over, the point should be rammed home hard: who’s the real thief, a producer of energy or a blood sucking state government?
