Gavin Newsom Supporter Tells Chinese American Activists to ‘Go Back to China’

While Governor Gavin Newsom and the Democratic Party claim to champion immigrant communities and diversity, a recent event in San Diego tells a different story. On Sunday, October 19^th, three Chinese American activists were verbally assaulted by a Newsom supporter who repeatedly shouted, “Go back to China!”

The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on the bridge on Carmel Mountain Road  over I-15. There, Ms. Zhang and two fellow members of Chinese Americans for Constitution (CAFC) were peacefully holding “No on Prop. 50” yard signs and banners. A young woman parked her car in the middle of the road, approached them aggressively, and yelled: “You don’t have the right to do this!” This lady began filming the activists and attempted to grab Ms. Zhang’s phone, physically pushing her in the process.

Concerned for their safety, Ms. Zhang told the woman she was endangering others by blocking the traffic and threatened to call the police. The woman responded with hostility, shouting “Don’t take video of me,” and again approached the CAFC activists. When the activists called for police assistance, the woman retreated to her car—but not before repeatedly shouting, “Go back to China!” Ms. Zhang recorded the incident and called out the woman’s behavior as racist.

CAFC, a grassroots organization of patriotic Chinese Americans, has been leading a proactive campaign against Proposition 50. Prop. 50 undermines Californians’ constitutional authority to draw electoral districts, rights established by Prop. 11 (2008) and Prop. 20 (2010). In just weeks, CAFC has distributed over 65,000 door hangers, posted signs at major intersections, and launched a robust social media campaign opposing Prop. 50.

“Ms. Zhang and her friends were exercising their constitutional right to political expression,” said CAFC Chair Mike Zhao. “What they encountered was racist harassment. By shouting ‘Go back to China,’ this Newsom supporter exposed the hypocrisy of the Democratic Party. Immigrants are only welcomed only when they toe the party line, not when they stand up for constitutional principles.”

“This incident reveals the true colors of Governor Newsom and his supporters,” added Frank Xu, CAFC co-chair and principal officer. “They prioritize one-party rule over the rights of everyday citizens.”

CAFC calls on all Californians to reject Proposition 50 and stand against political intimidation and racial discrimination.
