Who is Presidential Candidate Tom Steyer?
California Campaign Operations Director Job Posting in Steyer Campaign
By Katy Grimes, August 14, 2019 8:02 am
Latecomer Democratic Presidential candidate Tom Steyer is looking for California campaign staffers. And he’s so concerned about diversity, equity, and inclusion, he uses the acronym “(DEI)” in the advertisement.
Billionaire climate change activist Tom Steyer made his fortune investing in the energy sector, through his hedge fund company, the Farallon Capital Management fund, which Steyer managed until 2012. Farrallon invested in coal mines in Australia and Indonesia, as well as in tar-sands oil, which is strip mined, processed to extract the oil-rich bitumen, which is then refined into oil. It’s an interesting career change and about-face.
Steyer founded NextGen Climate, an organization immersed in green cronyism. NextGen is a 501(c)(4) organization, and the NextGen Climate Action Committee is a political action committee fighting the Keystone Pipeline. Steyer said on the NextGen blog that while climate change had not always been on his radar, he came to believe he could no longer invest in fossil fuels – after becoming a billionaire.
Many call Steyer a “ridiculous hypocrite” who built his multi-billion dollar-fortune by buying up foreign coal. But now Steyer uses his coal and energy fortune to try and manipulate the California and national political processes.
On the blog of NextGen Climate, which Steyer founded and is President, he wrote that while climate change had not always been on his radar, he came to believe he could no longer invest in fossil fuels. But that’s not entirely accurate. Steyer did an about face and started investing in green energy following California’s passage of AB 32, the Global Warming Solutions Act.
He’s hedging his bets.
Steyer has been and continues to be a vocal Keystone Pipeline opponent, however he frames divestment as a moral issue. This depends on the definition of the word “moral;” Steyer stands to add to his billions if the Keystone Pipeline project is ever killed, which he banked on during the Obama administration. However, President Donald Trump gave the Keystone Pipeline the go-ahead.
This triggered lawsuits by environmental groups, but the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals decision recently handed Trump a victory to start construction of the northern leg of the pipeline from Alberta to Nebraska.
President Barack Obama had decided in 2015 that Keystone XL should not be built, saying it wouldn’t serve the U.S. national interest. But in one of his first acts in the White House, President Donald Trump signed an executive order reversing that decision and directing the State Department to issue a construction permit. The issue has been litigated ever since, Inside Climate News reported.
Meanwhile, job hunters in California should know about Steyer’s job openings.

Tom Steyer has long been one of the most odious characters on the California public scene, but as we know he has plenty of competition. Because of his arrogance, malevolence and stunning lack of insight I think he would have made an excellent Columbo villain.
