Ric Grenell Tops Recall Rally Straw Poll

Poll results illustrate the thinking of a group of our state’s most dedicated activists

This weekend supporters of recalling California Governor Gavin Newsom gathered at the State Capitol for a rally, presenting a unique opportunity to find out who our state’s grassroots supporters prefer for a replacement.

Although the recall has yet to officially qualify, several candidates have already formally jumped into the race including former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, former Republican gubernatorial candidate and businessman John Cox, Major Williams, a southern California conservative activist and entrepreneur, and Mike Grover, a Roseville-based former law enforcement officer and small business owner.

Others suggested but who have not yet indicated if they will enter the race include Richard Grenell, who served as Ambassador to Germany and Acting Director of National Intelligence under former President Trump, and Doug Ose, a former Congressman from the Sacramento area.

Although these poll results are not scientific, they do illustrate the thinking of a group of our state’s most dedicated activists, painting a picture of which campaigns are gaining traction and whose leadership is resonating, apart from a declared campaign. In all I polled 153 rally participants, posing the question, “If the election to replace Gavin Newson were tomorrow, who would you vote for?”

Former Ambassador Ric Grenell, who has recently set Twitter abuzz with speculation following his high profile CPAC speech, came in first, with 52 votes. The second place finish went to “Undecided,” indicating many activists are not yet satisfied with the options.

Major Williams, who spoke at the rally, came in third with 18 votes. Mayor Faulconer achieved a fourth place finish with nine votes, followed by a tie for fifth with eight votes each for Assemblyman Kevin Kiley, who is not a candidate at this time, and Mike Grover.

John Cox received six votes, for a sixth place finish.

“Faulconer isn’t conservative enough and Cox had his shot,” said Sacramento State College Republican President Brett Roche, who attended the rally. This was reflective of the crowd’s general sentiment, that now is a time for new leadership that will embrace more conservative policies, as an antidote to the problems created by years of rule by liberal Democrats.

  1. No McClintock or Moorlach huh???

Why are California citizens so enamored with identity politics, instead of results???

    1. I wouldn’t vote for Moorlach for anything after the OC supervisor debacle to replace Michelle Steel’s vacancy. FIRE ALL the clowns who couldn’t figure out simple math – I blame all three of the Republican clowns who split up the vote to let a left wing Democrat win. ZERO leadership and inflated egos . FIRE the OC Republican party leadership too!!!

  2. The recall is based on Newsome’s handling of the pandemic. I don’t really see where this is an opportunity for a Republican candidate. Public Health really isn’t a partisan issue so a Democrat opposition to Newsome would remind voters that they selected Newsome as a democrat not as a public health expert and it would be advisable to maintain the state under democrat stewardship with the appropriate changes to public health actions.

    1. It was not only his handling of the pandemic. EDD FRAUD? Illegal Aliens?? Homeless Veterans. The list goes on and on.

    2. What a Joke! DemRats Destroying CA On every Issue! The Recall was HARDLY About a Newsoms Policy on Health issues, It was His Left wing outrageous, DICTATORSHIP OF CA ON EVERY POLICY LEVEL! CA Needs a REPUBLICAN CONSERVATIVE FOR ANY HOPE OF SAVING IT! BTW, CA Did not Vote Newsom in, HE STOLE IT! FACT. Get down to a FAIR ELECTION AND YOU WOULD FIND ACROSS THE BOARD, THE DEMORAT PARTY WOULD CEASE TO EXISTS!

    3. If Kiley jumped in, hands down I’d vote for him. He actually made the effort in the legal process and won his case against Newsom. I have confidence he will stand up against tyrannical mandates and push against the Federal level as well. Heard him speak recently. Otherwise a heavy hitter like Grenell would be second choice. Williams seems like a great guy but doesn’t bring experience or much confidence. Watched a video of Joe Collins giving Williams “props” but it was a joke. Williams didn’t even share his vision or let alone say anything to the viewership.

    4. Are you kidding, he is not being recalled for his handling of the Pandemic, that is just the Topper, Brown and Newsom have Run this state into the Ground.. Not to mention other Democrats in leadership positions.. The Democrat Stewardship has been a Disaster.. and it’s time for CHANGE! There is need for a republican to take the reins and whip this state back into a Flourishing state where the Lower and Middle class can get a foot up and NOT a Hand out!

  3. California GOP do not squander this opportunity by overplaying your hand. Get us a moderate electable sane candidate and we will support him. Don’t give us the GOP equivalent of this guy.

  4. Newsom’s recall is NOT only based on his handling of the pandemic (and his hypocrisy at the French Laundry restaurant) but ALSO by his support of CA’s ‘sanctuary’ state policies AND the elimination of Prop 13 AND the choo-choo train boondoggle. What about the unemployment fraud scandal, increasing homeless rates, and (when kids were in school) CA’s 38th national rank in K-12 education–but 15th highest in spending? He encourages ILLEGAL immigration giving them benefits paid with tax payer funds and mismanages our forests, ETC.
I agree with your poll: Grenell would be THE best choice, he has all the attributes to reinstate our once ‘golden’ status! Please tell Carpetbagger Cox: we do not want another losing RINO!!!!

  5. i THINK THAT RIC GRENELL IS MORE THAN QUALIFIED TO MAKE THE KINDS OF DECISIONS WE NEED , TO TURN THIS STATE INTO A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE CAN AFFORD TO LIVE. TOO MANY OF US NOW WISH TO LEAVE, BECAUSE OF TAXES AND DECISIONS BY OUR LOCAL GOVERNMENTS TO TAKE OUR RIGHTS AWAY FROM US. JUST WAIT UNTIL THIS GOVERNOR BEGINS TO RAISE OUR PROPERTY TAXES AND PERSONAL TAXES – THROUGH OUR LOCAL LEADAERSHIP. HE WILL DO – BIG TIME – IF HE STAYS IN OFFICE. I HAVE ALREADY LOST CLOSE FRIENDS WHO HAVE MOVED TO OTHER STATES, BECAUSE THEY ARE FAR MORE AFORDABLE TO LIVE IT. MANY OF US ARE RETIRED AND ARE STUCK – HERE.

  6. Don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble but what exactly will any Republican governor accomplish with a veto proof Dem legislature. They will pass stupid laws over the Gov’s veto and there is nothing he can do about it. With that said, I will vote for any Repub over what we got now.

    1. California Makes it’s own state laws, That is independent of DC, We can stop some of the laws being passed or reverse some of the state laws that have been put into place that harms the citizens of this state! For 1 lowering Taxes… Saving Business that are being forced out, Helping our Farmers and Ranchers! There is so much that can change under New leadership! Rick Grenell is one to seriously consider! We all have to be on the same page when it comes to voting!

  7. I would VOTE for any Republican that has NOT or being a career Politician. Give this state back to the People! GroverforGovernor, YES

  8. NEWSOM & THE WHOLE LEFT DEM CABINET NEED TO BE REPLACED THEY R BBBAAAAADDDD FOR CALIFORNIA & ANYOTHER STATE INEPT INCAPABLE OF GOOD JUDGEMENT LACKING IN MERITOCRACY & ABOVE ALL GOOD CONTENT OF CHARACTER … IGNORANT ABOUT LAW ^ ORDER & THE CONSTITUTION…
