AAA reports Monday June 23rd that the U.S. average price for a gallon of regular gas is $3.220.

June 4th, AAA reported that the national average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.144; mid-grade was $3.629; premium was $3.984 and diesel was $3.516.

Be still my beating heart.

California’s average price for a gallon of regular gas is $4.663.

  • Mid-grade gas is $4.875 per gallon;
  • Premium gas is $5.067 per gallon; and
  • Diesel is $5.118 per gallon.

California’s highest price for a gallon of regular gas is $5.868 in Mono County.

This is becoming a pretty sad but regular column at the Globe.

We are one week away from California’s July 1 gas tax hike, followed by the Independence Day holiday, one of the busiest road travel weekends of the year.

As the Globe reported last week:

California Democrats killed bills earlier this month that would have suspended the Low Carbon Fuel Standard gas tax increase of nearly 65 cents a gallon from going into effect July 1st.

Facing a 65 cent gas tax increase July 1st, everyone in California will be paying more than $5.00 for a gallon of regular gas. And that’s just on the way to an eventual $8.63 per gallon.

CalTax broke down the California Air Resources Board Low Carbon Fuel Standard tax and says the gas tax increase will be to 61.2 cents per gallon.

California’s excise tax on gasoline will increase to 61.2 cents per gallon July 1, an increase of 1.6 cents per gallon over the current rate of 59.6 cents per gallon, the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration announced June 4.

UPDATE June 24, 7:30pm:

The tax CalTax wrote about is the gasoline excise tax, as opposed to the tax that will happen as a result of low-carbon fuel standard changes. The amounts are very similar, which has caused confusion.
The excise tax — the per-gallon tax that was increased substantially by the Legislature several years ago, with a provision that requires the CDTFA to adjust the rate annually for inflation — is increasing from the current 59.6 cents per gallon to 61.2 cents per gallon, starting July 1.
The excise tax rate on diesel fuel will increase from 45.4 cents per gallon to 46.6 cents per gallon, likely leading to higher costs for consumers for many goods and services.

While there are minor disagreements on how much the gas tax will increase, we all agree that it will increase. Again. And again.

If you are taking the kids to an Orange County Beach July 4th, you will pay anywhere from $4.573 for a gallon of regular gas to $4.943 for a gallon of diesel – $91 to $100 for a fill-up.

If you are going camping in the San Bernardino Mountains, expect to pay $4.504 to $4.985 per gallon of gas or diesel.

A long weekend in Napa is going to cost a lot more than the $75 – $150 wine tasting fees; a gallon of Regular gas costs $4.992 in Napa, and diesel will cost $5.418 per gallon – well over $100 for a fill-up.

Even on the beautiful Central Coast where oil and gas development is rich, a gallon of Regular gas will cost $4.592 per gallon, and Diesel will cost $4.980.

Your trip to the Trinity Alps may necessitate a stop in Redding for a fill-up. A gallon of Regular gas in Redding will cost $4.495, and Diesel nearly $5.00 at $4.988 per gallon.

The California Air Resources Board voted to approve new gas regulations which will result in as much as a .65 cent per gallon gas tax on California’s gas prices. the Globe reported in November.

The California Governor, Legislature and State Air Resources Board have been working hand in glove to restrict the availability of oil and gas and increase the cost of gas at the pump so severely, middle class and working class drivers will be making choices between groceries and fuel for the car.

The Globe reported that California gas prices could escalate 75% to $8.43 per gallon in 2026 due to the pending shutdowns of two major in-state refineries, according to USC Professor Michael Mische.

For all of the Globe’s coverage of California’s ever rising gas prices, here is the link to the list.

  1. And considering the new war in the Middle East and its potential effect on oil prices the objective of curtailing our mobility be upon us.

    1. Very true & sobering unless the US can pivot quickly & re-establish the more abundant supplies that we enjoyed during President Trump’s first term….
California Democrats are hell-bent on forcing everyone into electric cars (preferably bought from BYD, the CCP’s manufacturing conglomerate), public transportation or 15-minute cities…
Newsom is following the WEF playbook to the best of his (limited mental) abilities….

      1. along with his taxes he if forcing out manufacturing and any business that produces anything. Forcing into electric cars that the grid can’t support.

    2. Democrats are in for a big surprise this next quarter election. many democrats I spoke with are ready to vote Republicans in to stop these dictatorship democrats pushing middle and low class citizens out of California.

  2. My biggest concern on Independence Day is if at the hands of loyal (d) voters, will my family and friends be incinerated on public land.

  3. The last worriers acting in defense of legacy Californians were Paul Gann and Howard Jarvis.

Not one damn Republican or Democrat has done anything substantive to thwart the rapacious and preditory government that has destroyed California, not one!

    1. Blame the democrats not Republicans. You voted democrats for their super majority so Republicans can’t do a thing. Think before you write nonsense. as you voted for democrats.

    1. I didn’t vote for any of these Demonazis that have destroyed this State, I’ve lived here for sixty years, it’s now time to leave. And remember Josef, just because someone is from California, doesn’t mean we’re Libtards, there’s still a lot of good people here, I for one am tired of this welfare State.

      1. California native here. Retired last year at 63, sold my overpriced 2 story track home, and used 40% of the proceeds to buy a much nicer (and newer) single story home on a 1/4 acre lot in a 55+ community in central Florida. The rest pays for several years of retirement including a large travel budget. Glad I left that overpriced mess called California.

        1. look over yonder. that dark cloud heading your way is none other as the Insurance Man..
yes, the guy who will clean your pockets just like it was cleaned in Cali. only difference is here in Cali the air is dry and that’s fine with me. good luck ansld stay away from the water. crods might get you.
          be Safe

  4. GOTTA FIX MY COMMENT. NO SYNPAHTY FROM THIS SIDE CALIFORNIA. YOU BROUGHT THIS ALL ON YOURSELVES. YOU VOTED YOUR MASTERS INTO OFFICE NOW YOU GOTTA DEAL WITH THE RESULTS.

    1. California elections are as legitimate as the extra weeks it takes the democrat party to manipulate the results.

    2. Several solutions.Lease a Hyundai Ioniq 6,or buy a new GM Equinox EV,or buy a used low mileage Tesla 3.Supplement with an e-bike.

    3. Hey Josey – they named it “dominion” for a reason… and coupled with voting SEASON, the voting fraud/corruption and manipulation is STRONG in California… blame much of this on Alex Padilla, who signed off on statewide deployment before he skated off to the D.C. swamp to take over for Kamala and charge at Kristi Noem for political theater….

  5. Here’s what I don’t quite understand, a 65c increase is a substantial tax hike, how does Newsom and the Democrats plan to spin this? I know their usual excuses starting with somehow blaming Trump for this. Will they blame this on Cooperate Greed, Climate Change, My Mother Made Me Do It? And what about this time next year when prices spike over $8 a gallon, Gavin Newsom will still be in office although I doubt if we’ll see much of him as he’ll the first on the campaign trail for the 2028 presidential election. The bottom line is this is all on Democrats and especially Gavin Newsom. I understand that state democrats will probably get away with this because we have a mixed bag of voters here in the formerly Golden State which includes elitists, Trump haters and stupid people who cast their mail in ballots here in this state. Not to mention dead people, illegals and non-existent people thanks to massive voter fraud. But Newsom who will taking his show on the road and trying to win over voters to the rest of the nation, does he really think his silver tongue can explain away 8-9 dollars of gasoline per gallon? I’m sure in his twisted mind he does. Now that I think about it Gavin Newsom’s head is a bit larger than the average person, it has to be to contain that massive ego of his. His ego will be the only thing that he’ll taking on the campaign trail as he has literally nothing else to offer the American people.

    1. They are not interested what voters think. They are guided by a higher authority that guarantees theur reelection

      1. Very very well said. It’s to bad they are really like this. I don’t hate them I pity them. Then prey for them like it says in the good book. Yes I’m a California native, 73 years old. and tired. I know that things will change for the good. We’re almost there. Have faith Brother’s. God is in control of everything. 😉

  6. Cannot hate these bastards enough! Ruining middle class working families and retirements with a flourish!

  7. Hmm, and I always thought those who vote determine what kind of government they want. High and higher gas prices, less pollution and solar power works for me!

  8. Its okay, Gav and 1st partner will lead the way by purchasing the new electric vehicles from China!
They will likely get a deep discount or perhaps one for free!
Leading us by example by locking the gate after they enter their secure compound and put all those yens in their safe at home.

  9. Once again Gavin Newsome is out to take as much money out of our pockets as he possibly can. He has not done one thing that is beneficial to the people of California. No Democrat should ever be voted in office for anything, they have ruined this once golden state.

  10. But for the size of California, and our five-dollar gas, the National Average price would be a hell of a lot lower.

  11. there doing this because Trump lowered gas prices everywhere else, so in there heads is good for the environment and they make Trump look bad by raising prices but I am sad to report rich people on the left don’t care they will keep voting for this forever until China buys California or someone crazy snaps and finds these people who are responsible for raising prices. 🤷

  12. Drill baby Drill and maybe that so called state in the west falls into the Pacific!!! And floats to china!

  13. This is another MAGA-fueled article that is completely erroneous and purposefully untruthful. The author, Katy Grimes, is a disgraceful to journalism. To say the tax increase is a “new increase of $0.65 per gallon” is simply a lie. The new increase is only $0.016/gallon and will increase the per gallon tax from 59.6 cents per gallon to 61.2 cents per gallon. I don’t like taxes any more than anyone else but blatant luring like Ms. Grimes must be called out. Shame on her.
