U.S. Border Patrol agents in Arizona arrested 52 individuals who were unlawfully present in the United States during a targeted enforcement operation last month, including 36 people found operating commercial semi-trucks, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
The operation, dubbed “Operation Checkmate,” was conducted by agents from the Yuma Sector between May 11 and May 15. According to CBP, the operation focused on enforcing immigration laws related to individuals operating commercial motor vehicles while unlawfully present in the country.
According to a press release from the agency, 30 of the arrested truck drivers were Indian citizens. The remaining six were from Mexico, El Salvador, and Russia. CBP stated that most individuals possessed Employment Authorization Documents issued during the Biden administration that were no longer valid. The agency said all of the individuals were processed in accordance with federal law and will be deported.
CBP reported that 36 of the 52 individuals arrested during the operation were driving semi-trucks at the time of their apprehension. Of those drivers, 29 possessed commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) issued by states including California, New York, Washington, and Virginia. Three of the drivers did not possess any driver’s license.
Acting Chief Patrol Agent Dustin W. Caudle said the operation was intended to address public safety concerns involving individuals operating large commercial vehicles while unlawfully present in the United States.
“Operation Checkmate reflects our commitment to safeguarding communities and roads from unlawfully present drivers who pose significant risks to public safety,” Caudle said in a statement released by CBP. “My agents are on patrol every day to ensure we stop these individuals and prevent more deadly crashes from occurring on the road across the United States.”

Federal officials have increasingly linked commercial vehicle enforcement efforts to several recent fatal crashes involving commercial drivers, including a 2025 Florida Turnpike crash that killed three people and a May 2026 fatal crash in California involving a semi-truck driver later identified by federal authorities as unlawfully present in the United States.
The Border Patrol said the operation was specifically designed to identify and arrest individuals operating commercial motor vehicles in violation of immigration laws. CBP described the effort as part of a broader initiative to strengthen enforcement of federal immigration statutes and improve highway safety.
The Yuma Sector is responsible for approximately 126 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border in southwestern Arizona and regularly conducts enforcement operations targeting human smuggling, narcotics trafficking, and immigration violations. The sector encompasses Yuma County and portions of La Paz and Maricopa counties.
Operation Checkmate is the latest in a series of federal efforts focused on commercial vehicle enforcement. Previous operations conducted by federal immigration authorities have targeted commercial trucking corridors and trucking companies in multiple states, resulting in the arrest of unlawfully present commercial drivers and other individuals accused of immigration-related violations.
CBP did not identify the trucking companies involved, disclose where the arrests occurred within the Yuma Sector, or indicate whether any employers would face additional investigation. The agency also did not announce any criminal charges beyond immigration-related violations in its initial release.
