President Trump to Begin Withholding Federal Funding from Sanctuary Cities

‘Californians want their local officials to abide by the requests of federal authorities’

On Thursday, President Trump said his administration will start withholding federal funding from “sanctuary cities” after a federal court ruled last week that it could do so.

“As per recent Federal Court ruling, the Federal Government will be withholding funds from Sanctuary Cities. They should change their status and go non-Sanctuary. Do not protect criminals!” the President announced on Twitter.

A federal appeals court in Manhattan ruled on Feb. 26 ruled that the Department of Justice could withhold funding from cities and states that refuse to cooperate with the Trump administration’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants, the Hill reported. “The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously overturned a district court judge’s ruling that the department lacked the authority to impose immigration-related conditions on certain funding.”

“The panel’s opinion, written by Judge Reena Raggi, found that Congress had delegated authority to the attorney general to set conditions on the federal grant program it had created, called the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program.”

California is a Sanctuary State.

In 2017, California Democrats rushed a bill through the Legislature to restrict local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration authorities on criminal illegal aliens.

Why? Out of little or no concern for the welfare of immigrants, many say illegal immigrants are the Left’s most reliable voting bloc, especially in California where illegal aliens can obtain a drivers license and vote.

Voters Don’t Want Sanctuary Cities; Politicians Do

Despite a University of California, Berkeley study of more than 1,000 Californians in 2017 which found 74 percent oppose sanctuary city policies, legislative Democrats jammed through SB 54 to restrict local police and sheriffs from assisting or cooperating with federal immigration authorities… and despite that the UC Berkeley study results included 73 percent of Democrats and 65 percent of Hispanics.

“We found very broad-based opposition to the idea of sanctuary cities,” said IGS Director Jack Citrin, a professor of political science at UC Berkeley who has studied immigration for years. “Californians want their local officials to abide by the requests of federal authorities.”

Then-California State Senate President Pro Tem Kevin De Léon (D-Los Angeles), and Capitol Democrats’ SB 54 created an (open) border-to-border sanctuary in the Golden State. De Léon said in 2017 that “half his family” was in the country illegally, using false documents, and eligible for deportation under President Trump’s new executive order against “sanctuary” jurisdictions, Breitbart California reported. Then-Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Los Angeles) admitted that he’s an anchor baby. Lara is now State Insurance Commissioner.

President Donald Trump said in 2017 he was prepared to withhold federal funding from California if it votes to become a sanctuary state. In a Fox News interview, Trump said, “If we have to, we’ll defund. We give tremendous amounts of money to California.”

“I don’t want to defund the state or city, I don’t want to defund anybody, I want to give them the money they need to properly operate a city or a state,” Trump said. However, “if they’re going to have sanctuary cities we may have to do that – certainly that would be a weapon.”

    1. These ” Cities” can refuse the cash, but in addition, they have sent in hundreds of BP agents in conjunction with Border SWAT teams to now pick all illegals off the street. Wanna bet the democrats didn’t see that one coming. Thank you President Trump for making us safe from illegal criminals and Criminal democrat political hacks who promote lawlessness for politics for political opportunity.

  1. Katy I like listening to you on the radio and am a fan but you don’t need to stretch the truth. Illegal immigrants can’t vote, at least not legally. Yes they can get a drivers license but they can’t register to vote without committing perjury by claiming to be citizens.

    1. Dave, Not only do some California cities allow illegal immigrants to vote in local elections, which already muddies the waters, there is significant evidence showing that in every election cycle, they are voting. California’s Secretary of State Alex Padilla was elected in 2014 thanks to election fraud in LA County.
The Heritage Foundation even, maintains a list of election fraud cases, including instances of ineligible voting and false registrations.
The Center for Immigration studies, which keeps records of all of the incidents as well, reports The National Voter Registration Act (Motor Voter) is flawed in that it has made it significantly easier for non-citizens to access the ballot.

      1. My ex husband (Thank God) has been receiving ballots in the mail for years until I finally had to ask them to stop sending them because he is not a citizen and was permanently deported back to Mexico years ago.

    2. And don’t you think that some of them care about committing perjury…they can’t even cull out dead people or people who have moved to a different state from the voting rolls.

    3. The criminal aliens have already broken the law by jumping the border. Do you really think they care if they break any other laws, such as perjury?

  2. Are you kidding my friend.. They ARE voting en-mass through the DMV who just happens to send ballots out to anyone as the new law sends registration too ALL CA drivers through the DMV… They have admitted too about 80,000 so far, but that not true at all. IT’s much, much higher. They have been voting for years due to the wink wink of the democrat party looking for any votes they can get.

  3. Thank you, President Trump, for pursuing this issue of sanctuary cities and states! We in California don’t support the legislature on this and although our cities will suffer from de-funding, we are willing to sacrifice if it causes our state to comply with ICE and obey federal law. Illegal aliens are committing criminal acts that are detrimental to American citizens and it needs to stop! In my opinion, ALL illegals need to be sent back to their home countries!

  4. I agree whole heartedly with Patricia Williams! Hope you aren’t unduly hurt by this, but it has to be done.
