Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Trip to China: Mocked for ‘Cringe-Inducing Moments’

The reviews of Newsom’s trip aren’t exactly glowing; this trip was all about Gavin, and no one else

By Katy Grimes, October 30, 2023 2:45 am

California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s ill-conceived trip to China, with a quick stop in Israel for some kibitzing with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following the Hamas attack, can be summed up in the headlines – all of which are very different, and not very flattering.

Newsom’s trip, sold to the media as a “climate-focused tour,” was more of a “See Gavin Newsom on the international stage pretending to be an international diplomat” tour. His PR team must have been working 24/7 on staged photo ops like this glamour shot, and impromptu “human” moments as the Tweet below shows.

That Newsom PR video was kind of weird. We aren’t the only ones who noticed:

As Gov. Newsom finishes up his week-long China tour, he sent out this statement Sunday announcing:

“California and Shanghai signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on protecting the environment, combating climate change, advancing climate adaptation and resilience strategies and accelerating clean transportation action.”

“California’s partnership with Shanghai spans decades – back to 1980 when the late, great Senator Dianne Feinstein, then San Francisco’s Mayor, forged the San Francisco-Shanghai Sister City relationship — the first such relationship between cities in China and the United States. This is a city I have visited many times, and each time I return, I am struck by the progress and transformation I see.

Sadly, California’s partnership with Shanghai does go back decades, thanks to the late Senator Feinstein who had a Chinese spy on her staff who worked for her for about 20 years, was listed as an “office director” on payroll records and served as her driver when she was in San Francisco, all while reporting to China’s Ministry of State Security through China’s San Francisco Consulate, AEI reported.

Great job Gavin – way to gloss over the Chinese Communist Party…

Just today, the Flash Report had these three headlines – the AP headline is laughable:

The first two articles focus on Newsom’s rank hypocrisy in Israel, “with Newsom’s show of solidarity with Israelis occurred just days after he signed legislation that, among other things, makes it illegal for Californians with concealed weapons permits to carry guns in their own synagogues, for example, to defend themselves against terrorists’ attacks,” Dan Walters wrote.

And the Washington examiner addressed “the most cringe-inducing moment of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D-CA) vanity trip to China,” and shared, “His claim that he spoke frankly with Chinese regime leader Xi Jinping about fentanyl is absurd.”

This trip was all about Gavin, and no one else.

In our coverage, the Globe focused more on the fact that he’s not the Secretary of State, and instead what the governor’s actual responsibilities are to his home state, which is suffering under an explosion of crime and drug-addicted homeless taking over the cities.

Here are some of the Globe’s highlights:

California Chinese Americans ‘Outraged’ at Governor Newsom’s Visit To China

Evan Symon at the Globe talked to Chinese Americans and reported:

“Chinese Americans in California have become more and more critical of the Governor making the trip, as well as outraged that Newsom has not pressed harder on issues ranging from human rights to stopping illegal fentanyl coming into the U.S.”

Grace Li, a coordinator of many Chinese clubs and groups in Southern California, added that “Newsom’s trip there is a disappointment. Him and his trip have come up often in the last week or so, and members from all these organizations are confused as to why he is there. He could have easily worked out deals from California and not go over there and cozy up with the communist government. But he did. Does he realize that this is the same government that is committing genocide against the Uyghur people? That has no freedom of the press? That has blocked most of the internet off? That bans Democratic images?”

“Newsom doing something so callous is mind-boggling.”

The Non-Presidential Candidate Gov. Gavin Newsom is Going to China, Israel

The list of terribly important California issues, and bad policy decisions is long – Governor Newsom’s California, can be partially summed up this way in this incomplete list of disastrous policy decisions:

With this list of epic failures, we are looking forward to the DeSantis/Newsom debate November 30th.

Critics Blast Newsom’s China Trip as Publicity Stunt, to ‘Burnish International Experience’

The Globe reported:While Newsom has pushed California heavily towards clean energy and electric cars as Governor, such as signing laws that will have California use 100% green energy by 2045 and only sell zero emissions vehicles statewide by 2035, his trip to China has been called out by many as little more than a publicity stunt.

Gov. Newsom Making Illegal Climate Change Compact With China

Lest anyone think this China thing with Gov. Newsom is fresh and new, in August, the Globe reported:

Following the discovery of the Illegal Chinese COVID Lab discovery in Reedley, which possibly could be CCP Biowarfare Lab, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced he was partnering with a province in China to fight climate change.

“Not a joke” as President Joe Biden would say.

Gavin in China: Visits BYD Electric Car Maker – Company He Awarded $1.4B Mask Contracts

Perhaps the standout moment of his China visit was when Newsom was filmed behind the wheel of the Build Your Dreams (BYD) Company’s newest electric vehicle – while a California Fox News Anchor traveling with Newsom never apparently puts 2 + 2 together.

If BYD rings a bell, you’ll recall that Newsom purchased $1.4 Billion of masks from Chinese company BYD at outset of COVID pandemic using taxpayers funds. Oh yes, it was. #corruption – electric vehicle company creates mask division at outset of Covid.

Sen. Feinstein wasn’t California’s only politician with ties to China:

Garcetti, China Scandal Exposed, Just Hours Before Ambassador Vote

It was only in March that the lid was blown off of former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s “Mayor’s Fund,” which had received well over $1 million in donations during Garcetti’s tenure from two wealthy individuals with ties to the Chinese Communist Party’s intelligence community. We haven’t heard much from the former Mayor since.

Fortunately, there are members in Congress who do take the China issue seriously. The Globe reported:

Select Committee on CCP Chairman Gallagher Discusses Recent California Trip

In April, a bipartisan group of lawmakers led by House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party Chairman Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) traveled to California for several high-level meetings with industry leaders, including studio executives from Hollywood, tech industry leaders in Silicon Valley, AI executives, and leaders from the rare-earth minerals mining industry, the Globe reported. “Most of us who do national security work know it involves Taiwan,” Rep. Gallagher said. He noted that Wall Street and the tech industries are involved in Taiwan, and China’s threats to invade the island country make it imperative to address. And Gallagher says those companies doing business in China can’t ignore that threat, nor can they ignore China’s genocide against the Uyghur people in the north-western region of Xinjiang, China’s largest minority ethnic group.

Never mind any of that piffle – According to the AP, Gavin’s trip to China “shows US-China engagement is still possible on a state level,” HUIZHONG WU, the Associated Press’s China correspondent based in Taiwan reported. “California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s trip to China, with the stated goal of working together to fight climate change, resulted in a surprise meeting with leader Xi Jinping and was filled with warm words and friendliness not seen in years in the China-U.S. relationship,” the AP said, sounding more like Pravda than the Associated Press. “Alex Wang, a professor of law at UCLA who focuses on the environment,” said “California could learn more about offshore wind technologies from China, which is a global leader in using the tech.”

The AP article is syrupy-sweet and nauseating.

Better to end on humor. Jennifer Van Laar at RedState put together The Mocking of Gavin Newsom’s Glamour Shot at China’s Great Wall Is Something to Behold, and included some of the best memes seen in a long time:

and this doozy:

These memes would be hilarious if this wasn’t true about California.

  1. The only good thing that came out of taking a vacation on the tax payers dime, is the national voting machine finally got to see what a moron California has to deal with. This was as much about revealing the limitations of letting “big dark money” sign off on your candidacy.
BTW, the UAW bosses have not made a peep. LOL @ striking suckers!

  2. If it turns out that Gavin Newsom runs for president next year he may have destroyed any chance on getting the nomination if Xi Jin Ping does something stupid like attack Taiwan.

  3. By the way, did Newsom think it’s was a Jewish Israeli child on the basketball court so that gave him justification to run him over?

  4. Newsom truly is a butt. I have appreciated yours and Ms. Van Laar’s articles about this trip. You both have put your respective readers in a place to see the behind the scenes that Newsom is a self-serving, power-hungry politician and would sell out anything to further his agenda. Men like this do not last long in the public arena.

  5. Love the “fixes” of Newsom’s glam shot. The last one above is my favorite. It’s PERFECT.
Beware —- Newsom’s recent actions have been so extremely lame and embarrassing maybe now he’s going for the “please feel sorry for me” group to get some support. Might work for a while but it won’t last long and then he’s DONE. Let’s hope.

  6. Well, this PROVES CONCLUSIVELY that Newsom & Biden are alike in two ways:
    1) They are for sale to the CCP
    2) They both trip over their own feet and fall down easily….

DO NOT let this tool anywhere NEAR the White House, people… you’ve been warned….

  7. I would caption his picture with Xi Jinping: “Twinning”

One might be an American white guy but they are both dictators.

  8. If the DNC and/or Newsom selects Michelle Obama as his VP running mate in 2024, he breaks the long tradition of Democrats picking an impeachment proof VP, like Obama did with Biden and Biden did with Harris.

Suddenly, there is a sufficient reason to impeach Newsom in order to get Obama IV.
    Watch your back, Gavin.

  9. Did his PR team coach him to TRY to look like a men’s cologne ad model, or is this just Newsom’s NORMAL afffectation?
Or is this his “First Partner” directing him to act like one of her “B” movie actors???
