Assemblywoman Jasmeet Bains (D-Delano) announced on Wednesday that she will be running against Congressman David Valadao (R-CA) for the 22nd Congressional District seat in 2026.

In a video announcement, Bains, a former physician, said that she is running for Congress primarily because of President Donald Trump’s recent Big Beautiful Bill. Specifically, she pointed out that Medicaid cuts in the bill pushed her to announce following months of speculation.

“From the beginning of this year, a lot of people were asking me if I would ever consider a run for Congress, and I kept saying, ‘I hope I don’t have to,” said Bains. “I have been working day in, day out, to help expand access in an area with some of the most Medicaid patients in the country and this directly cuts a lot of the work that I have been doing. The whole reason why I even ran for an Assembly seat in the first place.

  1. Such a six year long and storied clinical career. Whew, got out just in the ‘nick of time’, that was a close one!

    1. She has two stirrups on that saddle: MD and Sikh. She’ll milk ’em both for all they’re worth, I’m sure.
