California Democrats Call Omar Home Search ‘Fascism’ After Cheering Mar-a-Lago Raid as Rule of Law

Newsom, Khanna, Kamlager-Dove and Aguilar reverse the rule-of-law standard they applied to Mar-a-Lago

Federal agents executed a judicially authorized search warrant early Monday at the Washington, D.C.-area home of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation. Homeland Security Investigations officers arrived before dawn. Neighbors reported banging on doors around 4:30 a.m. Agents were later seen removing boxes.

The Justice Department confirmed that HSI “executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice” and that the action is “part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.” Sources familiar with the probe told multiple outlets it concerns immigration fraud allegations tied to paperwork filed by Omar’s late father when she was a child. Omar, born in Somalia, entered the United States as a refugee in 1995.

Omar called it political intimidation. “Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” she wrote on X. “For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.” Her office described the search as “an outrageous abuse of power.”

California Democrats piled on. Gov. Gavin Newsom posted: “Twenty-two days away from the midterm election, another politicized ‘investigation.’ Straight out of the authoritarian playbook.” Rep. Ro Khanna called it “simply chilling that they are targeting political opponents this way” and “disturbing that they are targeting Muslim Americans and a Muslim American legislator.” He said any decent American needs to “stand up and speak out.”

Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove went further, labeling the search “fascism in the extreme” and “an unadulterated abuse of power.” She accused Trump of weaponizing the federal government to escalate “racist attacks” against Omar and to undermine her before the Nov. 3 midterms. House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar of California joined Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Whip Katherine Clark in a joint statement calling the search “deeply disturbing” and an example of the “continued corrupt weaponization of the federal government against Donald Trump’s adversaries.” They promised “full accountability for the rogue abuse of power” from DHS and DOJ.

The language is the exact opposite of what California Democrats used when the FBI searched former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in August 2022 under a judicially authorized warrant tied to classified documents.

Then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California said the search showed that “no one is above the law, not even a president or a former president of the United States.” On NBC she repeated: “We believe in the rule of law. That’s what our country is about. And no person is above the law. Not even the president of the United States. Not even a former president of the United States.” She acknowledged she knew little beyond the public reports and said the warrant itself required justification.

Then-Rep. Adam Schiff of California treated the Mar-a-Lago search as evidence that the Justice Department was finally following the facts. He said Trump and his team “knowingly put our national security at risk” by keeping highly classified material at a private club, noted that anyone else in the intelligence community would face serious legal jeopardy for the same conduct, and called the government’s later filings “devastating.”

In 2022 the existence of a judicially authorized warrant was treated as proof the system was working. In 2026 the existence of a judicially authorized warrant is treated as proof the system has been seized. The same California Democrats who insisted the rule of law required the search of a former president’s home now describe the search of a sitting congresswoman’s home as fascism, racist weaponization, and an authoritarian playbook move—before any charges have been announced and while the investigation remains ongoing.

The contrast does not require accepting or rejecting the underlying allegations. It requires noticing that the principle “no one is above the law” was applied to one target and withdrawn for the other.
